The Justice & Police Museum Logo and Images

The Justice & Police Museum

Cnr Phillip & Albert Streets, Sydney City NSW 2000

Step into the dark side of Sydney’s past with a visit to a historic police and court building (1856 –1886) that once imposed authority on Sydney’s unruly waterfront. Explore the building’s atmospheric interior – heavy blocks of sandstone, spiked gates and the corridor of cells. In the 1890s police Charge Room you can stand before the Duty Sergeant’s desk and imagine yourself being fingerprinted. Encounter a spine-chilling collection of criminal weapons and a mug-shot gallery of offenders that stare defiantly back at you from the walls.

Home to a vast negative archive documenting police investigation, many important records and over 9000 objects, the Justice & Police Museum examines the social history of law, policing and crime in New South Wales. A comprehensive school education program and lively public programs extend the appeal of this Museum.

Sydney Jewish Museum Logo and Images

Sydney Jewish Museum

148 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst NSW 2010

The Sydney Jewish Museum is dedicated to documenting and teaching the history of the Holocaust so that these events will never be repeated.

This world-class museum challenges visitors' perceptions of democracy, morality, social justice and human rights and places the Holocaust in its historical and contemporary context.

The Governor of NSW, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair AC, officially opened the Sydney Jewish Museum on 18 November 1992. Since its opening it has quickly become an integral part of the cultural life of Sydney, winning the 1994 Award of Distinction in the NSW Tourism Awards for Excellence, and a Commendation in the 1995 Human Rights Awards.

Housed in the historic Maccabean Hall, the Sydney Jewish Museum presents visitors with an overview of the best and worst of humanity.

The Maccabean Hall, built to commemorate NSW Jewish men and women who served in WW1 and to honour the memory of those who lost their lives, was formally opened on Armistice Day in 1923 by the universally beloved Sir John Monash.

Vaucluse House Logo and Images

Vaucluse House

Wentworth Road, Vaucluse NSW 2030

Houses and their owners have a tendency to be reflections of one another. Vaucluse House presents venerable Gothic Revival façades to Sydney Harbour but the mansion, built in fits and starts between 1805 and the early 1860s, is in a mixture of styles, is unresolved in terms of its layout and lacks the social grace of a formal entrance.

Its builder, William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872) is known today as one of our early colonial statesmen. His sense of his place in societywas undermined by illegitimacy and convict associations. With the rising tide of Victorian morality his wife Sarah was shunned as lacking respectability and the family had to socialise outside of colonial society. Vaucluse House’s lack of cohesion is perhaps a result of Wentworth’s brooding anger at this slight and the house’s slow growth over decades. In contrast with the house, the grounds preserve a remarkably complete 19th century estate plan with stables, rural outbuildings, carriage drives, paddocks, lawns, a serene pleasure garden and recreated Victorian kitchen garden.

Susannah Place Museum

58 - 64 Gloucester Street, Sydney City NSW 2000

Built in 1844, Susannah Place Museum is a terrace of four houses that incorporates a recreated 1915 corner store. Rare in the city of Sydney, it has a continuous history of domestic occupancy by working class families. Susannah Place Museum provides a rare opportunity to explore domestic working class life from 1844 to 1990. It is evidence of the richness of community life that existed in The Rocks. The modest interiors and rear yards illustrate the restrictions of nineteenth century inner city life. The many layers of the paint finishes, wallpapers and floor coverings that have survived provide a valuable insight into the tastes of the working class. The original brick privies and open laundries are some of the earliest surviving washing and sanitary amenities remaining in the city. Please note: Museum entry is by guided tour only. Entry also included with the Sydney Museums Pass. See website for details.
